Kalundborg – Green Industrial Municipality in 2020
For a number of years, Kalundborg Municipality has emphasised the importance of promoting sustainability and eco-friendly technologies not least because many of our large industrial enterprises, for obvious reasons, consume substantial amounts of energy.
Kalundborg Municipality is the largest industrial region outside Copenhagen. The area includes e.g. two of the world’s leading producers of enzyme and insulin, the largest water treatment plant of Northern Europe and the second largest oil refinery of the Baltic Region. In 2009, the world’s biggest demonstration plant of 2nd generation bioethanol was built in Kalundborg. This explains why energy saving programmes and increased sustainability have major potential in Kalundborg Municipality.
Approximately 9% of Denmark’s overall CO2 emissions originate from the industries of Kalundborg Municipality. It is therefore only natural for us to lead the way in the struggle against global climate changes and to contribute proactively to the construction of sustainable energy and environmental programmes. We have done so by launching a series of important climate, energy and environmental activities in close collaboration with the industry, and more activities are on the way.
These efforts are all steps on the way to an ambitious target: To make Kalundborg Denmark’s Green Industrial Municipality in the year 2020. Below follows a survey of our major activities within climate, energy and the environment:
